COLIN JOHN DAVIES

“Amazed and inspired by the beautiful coastline and mountains of my homeland, I enjoy spending most of my time painting it. I often sit for hours, watching the waves whipped into a wind-blown frenzy. I strive to paint the noise and communicate the drama and powerful presence of unstoppable, grabbing water as it cascades inland with pounding fury. Equally, I love the time spent walking across the mountains of Bannau Brycheiniog and Eryri where the changing light of billowing skies over wind-swept moorland and rocky crags provides inspiration for recent work”,

Following a teaching career lasting over thirty years, Professional artist, Colin Davies, traded life as a headteacher to fulfil a lifelong desire to be a full-time painter. Swapping the classroom for canvas back in 2019, he now channels his love of the Welsh landscape into dynamic, energetic paintings, infused with atmosphere and scale. Showcasing the unpredictability and rawness of the land and sea, his bold, richly textured technique captures both the serenity and the intensity of nature, from the crashing waves of the Gower Peninsular to the majestic drama and moody beauty of the windswept peaks of Bannau Brycheiniog.
Colin’s paintings are exhibited in galleries throughout the UK and are found in private collections across the country and internationally. As well as producing work for galleries and exhibition, he leads adult painting classes and demonstrates his technique to art groups and societies across the country.
His technique is bold, dynamic and richly textured. Working primarily with oils and acrylics, he favours palette knives and expressive brushwork to create movement and depth. He builds each painting through layers of paint, often beginning with loose underpainting to establish tone and structure. Using sweeping brushstrokes, Colin applies thick impasto layers that add energy and texture to his landscapes. This technique captures the drama of crashing waves, windswept hillsides and the ever-changing skies that define the Welsh landscape. To balance this energy, Colin carefully introduces softer blending techniques, using delicate brushwork to create pockets of calm within his compositions. This contrast between bold mark-making and quieter, more refined details is a signature feature of his work, resulting in pieces that feel both powerful and serene.
Colin’s process is deeply intuitive, often guided by the mood of the scene he is portraying. Whether painting coastal cliffs, mountain ranges, or rolling countryside, his focus is on evoking the atmosphere and emotional impact of the landscape rather than replicating it in precise detail. By capturing the raw beauty of nature with bold textures, vibrant colours and expressive techniques, Colin’s work invites viewers to step into the heart of the landscape and experience its energy firsthand. His love for Wales’ breathtaking scenery continues to shape his art, making each piece a heartfelt tribute to the landscapes that inspire him.
