COLIN JOHN DAVIES
Colin Davies is a full-time artist based in South Wales. He spent thirty two years in education, finally retiring in 2019, fulfilling a life long ambition to trade life as a headteacher for that of a professional painter.
After 'taking the plunge' into the professional art world, Colin worked for a short period as partner in a Fine Art Gallery near his home in Mumbles. Following on from this, he decided to move on to develop his artistic journey and 'learn the trade' on a wider front. He now concentrates on building his portfolio and further developing his knowledge and experience by painting daily.
"Being relatively new to the professional art world, I'm keen to learn and continue to develop my style and skills. Being able to meet and work with other artists and collectors is a real privilege. It is gratifying to realise that what I love doing can also bring joy to others. Knowing my work is appreciated enough for others to want to hang on their walls really is a dream come true."
Using mainly oil and acrylic paints, Colin's rich and expressive style is created with the generous application of paint using a swift, tumultuous sweep of a palette knife, often followed with more detailed brushwork application. Inspired by the beautiful coastline and mountains of Wales, much of his work depicts the power and vitality of the ocean. His atmospheric representation of the drama and rugged beauty of the Gower coastline, in particular, is regularly exhibited and increasingly collected across the UK and internationally.
“I love to watch the sea whipped into a wind blown frenzy, to listen to the waves crash in a ferocity of noise and power. I strive to paint that noise, to communicate the drama, the terrifying and unstoppable power of sweeping, grabbing water forming a powerful presence as it cascades inland with pounding fury.”
